Vir die afgelope 18 jaar vind Nasionale Braaidag plaas op inisiatief van Jan Braai, gemik daarop om al 60 miljoen Suid-Afrikaners op 24 September rondom braaivure saam te bring. In hierdie tyd het Jan twee MBA’s verwerf: sy meestersgraad in besigheidsadministrasie aan die Universiteit van Kaapstad en sy meestersgraad in braai-aktiwiteite aan die Universiteit van die Lewe. Die New York Times het Nasionale Braaidag as “een van die mees belangrike kulturele feesvierings in die wêreld” bestempel. Elke jaar neem ongeveer 15–20 miljoen Suid-Afrikaners deel aan feesvieringe op Nasionale Braaidag en dit groei steeds. Jan Braai is die skrywer van ses topverkoperboeke oor die onderwerp van braai, en die boeke is in verskeie tale vertaal en internasionaal gepubliseer. Hy is die aanbieder van die hoogaangeskrewe televisieprogram Jan Braai vir Erfenis op DStv Kyknet en Showmax. Dié program is tans in sy twaalfde seisoen.
