To his troops he was 'Bloody George', a hard-bitten professional soldier, technically competent and tactically proficient. His brigade bore the brunt of the fighting in Greece. He commanded the entire Australian force in Crete in the battle against German airborne invaders. David Horner is a Fellow at the Strategic and Defence Studies Centre, Australian National University. He is the author or editor of fifteen books on Australian military history, strategy, command and defence policy, including The Commanders: Australian Military Leadership in the Twentieth Century and High Command: Australia and Allied Strategy 1939–1945.
