This book paves the road for researchers from various areas of engineering working in the realm of smart cities to discuss the intersections in these areas when it comes to infrastructure and its flexibility. The authors lay out models, algorithms and frameworks related to the ‘smartness’ in the future smart cities. In particular, manufacturing firms, electric generation, transmission and distribution utilities, hardware and software computer companies, automation and control manufacturing firms, and other industries will be able to use this book to enhance their energy operations, improve their comfort and privacy, as well as to increase the benefit from the electrical system. The book pertains to researchers, professionals, and R&D in an array of industries.

Miadreza Shafie-khah is an Associate Professor at the University of Vaasa, Finland. He received his PhD and first postdoc from the University of Beira Interior (UBI), Portugal in 2015, and his second postdoc from the University of Salerno, Italy in 2016, in electrical engineering. He was an invited assistant professor at the UBI and INESC TEC, Porto, Portugal. He is the Editor-in-Chief of International Journal of Renewable Energy Technology, Guest Editor-in-Chief of IEEE Open Access Journal of Power and Energy, an Editor of the IEEE TRANSACTIONS ON SUSTAINABLE ENERGY, an Associate Editor of the IEEE Systems Journal, an editor of the IEEE Open Access Journal of Power and Energy, an Associate Editor for IET-RPG, and the guest editor of IEEE TRANSACTIONS ON CLOUD COMPUTING and more than 16 Special Issues. He is Senior Member of IEEE and in the Steering Committee of International Conference on Smart Energy Systems and Technologies (SEST), and is the General Chair of SEST’21 in Vaasa, Finland. He has published more than 400 refereed journal, conference papers, and book chapters. He is also the volume editor of the Elsevier book entitled “Blockchain-based Smart Grids”. His research interests include electricity market design, demand response, electric vehicles, and smart cities.

M. Hadi Amini is an Assistant Professor at the Knight Foundation School of Computing and Information Sciences, Florida International University. He received his Ph.D. in Electrical and Computer Engineering from Carnegie Mellon University in 2019, where he received the M.Sc. degree in 2015. He also holds a doctoral degree in Computer Science and Technology. Prior to that, he received the M.Sc. degree from Tarbiat Modares University in 2013, and the B.Sc. degree from the Sharif University of Technology in 2011. His research interests include efficient machine learning and optimization algorithms, distributed algorithms, interdependent networks, and cyberphysical resilience. Hadi is a life member of IEEE-Eta Kappa Nu (IEEE-HKN), the honor society of IEEE. He served as President of Carnegie Mellon University Energy Science and Innovation Club; as technical program committee of several conferences; and as the lead editor for a book series on ‘‘Sustainable Interdependent Networks’’ since 2017. He has published more than 100 refereed journal, conference papers, and book chapters. He also serves as Associate Editor of SN Operations Research Forum and International Transactions on Electrical Energy Systems. He has published more than 100 refereed journal and conference papers, and book chapters. He edited/authored six books. He is the recipient of the best paper award from “2019 IEEE Conference on Computational Science & Computational Intelligence”, best reviewer award from four IEEE Transactions, the best journal paper award in “Journal of Modern Power Systems and Clean Energy”, and the dean’s honorary award from the President of Sharif University of Technology.
