Caligula wurde als Gaius Caesar Germanicus am 31. August des Jahres 12 nach Christus vermutlich in Antium geboren und wurde am 24. Januar des Jahres 41 nach Christus als Kaiser in Rom ermordet. Seinen Namen Caligula erhielt er schon in früher Kindheit, die er mit seiner Familie im Soldatenlager in Germanien verbrachte. Dort steckte seine Mutter ihn in ein kleines Soldatenkostüm, so dass er den Spitznamen „Caligula“ bekam, was so viel wie „Kleine Stiefel“ oder „Soldatenstiefelchen“ bedeutet. Mit 24 Jahren war Caligula schließlich der jüngste Kaiser, den Rom je hatte. Dabei war er zunächst gar nicht als möglicher Thronfolger angedacht worden.
