A second, slightly longer impression followed in 1922, and Stephen Hudson’s English translation In Sight of Chaos was issued in Zurich in 1923. This is a brand new translation from the original printing. Published as the Treaty of Versailles destabilized Central Europe, this essay collection diagnoses the continent’s moral vacuum through Dostoevsky’s apocalyptic vision. Hesse, writing from neutral Switzerland, frames postwar chaos not as aberration but as latent truth exposed by war’s ravages.
