Ji Lizhen was born in Wenzhou, Zhejiang in 1964, and received a Bachelor of Science degree from Hangzhou University in 1984. In 1987, he received his MS from the University of California, San Diego. In 1991, he received his PhD from Northeastern University in the United States. He proceeded to do his research, first in Massachusetts Institute of Technology and then in Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton. From 1995, he has been teaching at the Department of Mathematics of the University of Michigan, where he is now a tenured professor. He has won the Sloan Research Fellowship as well as the National Science Foundation Postdoctoral Fellowship. His main research directions are Lie groups, discrete subgroups and related spaces, such as symmetric spaces, which are symmetric phenomena in mathematics.
