Series description:
Children see magic because they want to; they come to expect it. They celebrate the movements of life with eyes that have yet to become jaded. Their hearts are pure; their souls remain pristine, unmarred, without nicks, scratches, or breaks. Where children come from, though, magic has always been true.
Life on earth is seldom what we expect. The world can be cruel. Somewhere along the way, things get corrected. Something inside wakes us and places us on a path of destiny. The trail itself is not one a child would choose. Sadly, very few of us get to follow our dreams. Life is a lesson the spirit needs to grow. Still, the scenery is picturesque, the company, ofttimes, pleasant, the circles of friends and family grow ever wider; the world gets smaller, and time marches on.
If we are lucky, our young personalities grow into being. We begin to discover our place in the world. We see the beauty in love and procreation. We find moments of joy, success, even happiness. We begin to expect such things when fortune smiles. It is an easy path to follow, and most are content with that. Somedays, Calvin almost envied them. But he never got to walk their kind of path; his journey led him to places others did not want to go. He noticed things most would not.
Calvin had talents and skills that allowed him to see inside a heart. It took him seconds to read everything about them. He found himself accepted and well-liked, but it was a sham. He mirrored what they wanted and expected, and it wore on him. He lost himself, so he retreated from the world. In books, he found like minds and insight, broken men who learned to rise again. He found spirituality in the words of medicine men, Wiccans, and monks. He found wisdom, courage, visions, and dreams in comic and history books. There was seldom a night he greeted sleep without at least reading a few pages. Almost everyone fills a hole inside their hearts. Calvin filled what he could with the words of others. He was good with that until he found the kitten that changed his life. The kitten was ill and needed full-time care. He gave up his life to help "just a cat," his friends were fond of telling him. Then, after losing everything else, he found the cardboard box from 1972 with the photo album and journal.
Locked within the box were the remnants of childhood, gathered and saved by loving grandparents: a moldy box full of useless trinkets and talismans. He found his first childhood photo, taken with a Sears & Roebuck Santa from 1958. He found an ancient Mayan bird whistle, a chunk of bismuth, an old medicine bundle collected by him and his grandfather, and the old clay pipe his grandfather slipped him along with the picture taken after. He found his soul. He remembered his promise, his hopes, his childhood wishes. He found a secret. He found his voice. Then, he discovered his heart in the last place he expected.
Somewhere between Time and Reality hidden within the books; A Conversation:
Morpheus – "Ladies. After a thousand years, a million twists and turns. Are you sure you want to start this again?"
Lachesis – "One has to have a hobby dearie, an idle mind and all that goes with it…”
Morpheus – "Yes, yes, I understand. Tis' the nature of gods and goddesses to dabble, but you placed a dragon in hibernation. You three let loose her progeny; let loose her defenders. The trouble you set in motion…”
Clotho – "Was needed. This world had grown old and stale; it was all about profit; attaining more, always wanting more. It was boring and devoid of beauty; it lacked compassion, faith, great love. The last great love on record was Romeo and Juliet.”
Morpheus – "Which, if I remember correctly, you also had a hand in. How did that go?”
Atropos – "As meant, finding our one true love changes the world. It inspires and feeds one's soul.
