The ideas it has about Christmas and the Christmas narrative are interesting, and the story-within-a-story structure is used to good effect. To complain that it's far-fetched would be unfair given the subject matter, but the book tried to resolve its narrative loose ends by invoking a sort of "it doesn't matter what we believe as long as we are kind to each other" defence, which makes it work as a philosophical or religious text but not perfectly as a novel.

JOSTEIN GAARDER was born in Oslo in 1952.
SOPHIE'S WORLD, the first of his books to be published in English, has been translated into 60 languages and has sold over 40 million copies.
He is the author of many other bestselling, beloved novels and children's books.
He lives in Oslo with his family.
