È tra i più noti atti unici del teatro pirandelliano. Derivata da una sua precedente novella dal titolo “Caffè notturno”, questa commedia, incentrata su di uno sconosciuto (malato terminale di cancro) che si racconta ad un viaggiatore in una piccola stazione di provincia, pone il problema dell’uomo davanti alla morte.
Il monologo del protagonista è, come sempre in Pirandello, portato avanti con estrema coerenza. In teoria la commedia, mancando di azione, non potrebbe essere definita “teatro”, ma l’autore è stato in grado di arricchirla di particolari capaci di offrirle una cornice fortemente significativa dal punto di vista della messa in scena.
