Thukydides ist der Begründer der politischen Geschichtsschreibung. Er war ungefähr 30 Jahre alt, als 431 v. Chr. der Peloponnesische Krieg ausbrach, jener jahrzehntelage Machtkampf zwischen Athen und Sparta, an dessen Ende Athen - und mit ihm die Demokratie - gegen das spartanische Königtum unterlag. Thukydides hatte hier sein Lebensthema gefunden. Doch bevor er zum Chronisten der Kämpfe zwischen den beiden Blöcken wurde, hat er selbst an ihnen teilgenomnmen. Im Jahre 425/4 v. Chr. bekleidete er das hohe militärische Amt des Strategen, bis ein Misserfolg zu seiner Verbannung führte. Er lebte daraufhin 20 Jahre im Exil und kehrte erst nach Kriegsende nach Athen zurück.
