This rides a line between SF, Space Opera, and a cozy version of one of those. Not quite Becky Chambers level cozy, but nonetheless I have some serious concerns with how easy things proceed. For example, despite being in the middle of a literal war, it lasts only a page or two and they're fine, no issues. Ultimately Kitasei is far more interested in the interspecies friendship dynamics. She writes it well, and the rest of the book too, but I can't help think there could have been so much more.

Yume Kitasei is the author of The Deep Sky and The Stardust Grail. She is Japanese and American and grew up in a space between two cultures—the same space where her stories reside. She lives in Brooklyn with two cats, Boondoggle and Filibuster. Her stories have appeared in publications including New England Review, Catapult, SmokeLong Quarterly, and Baltimore Review.
