I liked the book but I found myself skimming through much of the last part when she was in Venice. I just wanted it to get to the point as it started to feel more like a travelogue. It dragged on with irrelevant details. Also, the lack of further insight into the mother's illness, annoyed me. I made my own assumptions on that but won't go into detail as it would be a spoiler for those who have yet to read the book. Still, this was a pretty good read and it kept me turning the pages. 3.5 out of 5.

Emily Barr is the well-loved and bestselling author of Backpack, the original backpacking novel, and many other highly acclaimed novels. A former journalist, she has travelled around the world and written columns and travel pieces for the Observer and the Guardian. After living in France, Emily and her husband (whom she met backpacking) have settled in Cornwall with their three children.
