About this ebook

2025 REVISED AND EXPANDED EDITION • The landmark book exploring what the Bible actually says—and doesn’t say—about same-sex relationships

As a young Christian man, Matthew Vines harbored the same basic hopes of many young people: to one day share his life with someone, to build a family of his own, to give and receive love. But when Vines realized he was gay, those hopes were called into question. The Bible, he’d been taught, condemned gay relationships.

Feeling the tension between his understanding of the Bible and the reality of his same-sex orientation, Vines devoted years to intensive research into what the Bible says about homosexuality. He asked questions such as:

• What was the real sin of Sodom?
• What did Paul have in mind when he wrote about same-sex relations?
• Is mandatory celibacy biblical?
• Can same-sex marriage fulfill Scripture’s vision for marriage?

Accessibly written and carefully argued, this expanded edition of God and the Gay Christian includes an updated introduction, two new chapters, and two new appendices. In the book, Vines engages with leading critiques of his work and shows readers how affirming same-sex relationships can go hand in hand with maintaining moral boundaries and upholding an orthodox Christian faith.

Leviticus 18:22 Thou shalt not lie with mankind, as with womankind: it is abomination. Leviticus 20:13 If a man also lie with mankind, as he lieth with a woman, both of them have committed an abomination: they shall surely be put to death; their blood shall be upon them. Romans 1:26-27 For this cause God gave them up unto vile affections: for even their women did change the natural use into that which is against nature: And likewise also the men, leaving the natural use of the woman, burned in their lust one toward another; men with men working that which is unseemly, and receiving in themselves that recompence of their error which was meet.

You can't make something say what you want it to. You must search its true meaning and be objective. This book claiming that God endorses homosexuality is completely untrue. Sadly, most people these days don't seem to care about the truth and just want to do whatever they want no matter the consequences. If you live life allowing your emotions to dictate your truth, you'll be tossed around by your emotions, and what you claim to be truth will change daily. Only God can lead to the true life we all deeply want. Because God is a good Father, He's not going to lie to you. If you truly ask God for the truth, He'll tell you, but you also have to be willing to change if you're wrong about something. God loves you!

Whoever thinks God is in favor of same-sex relationships is blind to the truth. God will reveal the truth when you're ready to see it. If you don't want to see it, you won't. The Old Testament forbids moral depravity and also food laws, clothing laws, festival and ritual laws. The New Testament does away with food laws and mixed fabrics in clothing as well as ceremonial laws but retains moral laws such as same sex relations as being abominations in the sight of God. We don't need years of research into things like this, desperately wanting scripture to say what we want it to. It will never justify our sin.
