Didn't thrill me as Eloisa James can🤔 I've long been an Eloisa James fan. Her Duke series totally delighted me. At her best she imbues her historical romance plots with whimsy & humor along with a touching romance. But this one just didn't do it for me, despite some good secondary characters like the coachman & the hero's chicken-loving nephew. Clara's housekeeper "disguise" didn't hold water & her constant quotes from Regency gothic romances: just no! And male lead Caelen: too secretive.

One of the most enjoyable and down-to-earth romance novels I've ever had the pleasure of reading. So many moments that will tickle you, make you sigh with wistfulness, and cheer for joy at the hero's instant urge to handle any fool that hurt his woman. Definitely a winner from Eloisa James!!

I loved this book so much. I thought the storyline was fun and that the blend of emotion, drama, humor, heat and heart was skillful. Clara and Caelan were very easy to like, care about and root for. Their banter was witty, and I thought that they made a good pairing.

Eloisa James is a USA Today and New York Times bestselling author and professor of English literature, who lives with her family in New York, but can sometimes be found in Paris or Italy. She is the mother of two and, in a particularly delicious irony for a romance writer, is married to a genuine Italian knight.
