About this ebook

A New York Times and Los Angeles Times Bestseller

“Doughty chronicles [death] practices with tenderheartedness, a technician’s fascination, and an unsentimental respect for grief.” —Jill Lepore, The New Yorker

Fascinated by our pervasive fear of dead bodies, mortician Caitlin Doughty embarks on a global expedition to discover how other cultures care for the dead. From Zoroastrian sky burials to wish-granting Bolivian skulls, she investigates the world’s funerary customs and expands our sense of what it means to treat the dead with dignity. Her account questions the rituals of the American funeral industry—especially chemical embalming—and suggests that the most effective traditions are those that allow mourners to personally attend to the body of the deceased. Exquisitely illustrated by artist Landis Blair, From Here to Eternity is an adventure into the morbid unknown, a fascinating tour through the unique ways people everywhere confront mortality.

If you enjoy Caitlin's online content you'll surely enjoy this book. We need to remove the taboos surrounding death and the discussion of it, and a great way to do that is to learn about other cultures and their attitudes towards death and the dead.

I felt moments of compassion and sorrow and joy in reading this book that I rarely get. I'm only "sad" that it seems so short, but I imagine that Caitlin put a terrific amount of emotional labor into these experiences, and over again when she wrote about them. If she were to write about every death ritual in the world, I would read all of those books.

I know most people find the subject of death, and cultural rituals, morbid. I've never felt that way, and while the thought of dying does (on some level) scare me...the way I want my death handled...doesn't. The different ways cultures handle their dead is fascinating to me. Some will find horror in it and express wide-eyed confusion. I say keep an open mind and respect their ways. Grieving isn't an easy process and however people need to handle it, is their choice...without judgment. I am young-ish 🤣🤣 and have thought about what I want when I pass. I have started to make plans as it's not just my wishes that matter, but also the want to make it easier for loved ones left behind. Whatever I can do to ease their pain and heartache, the better.
