Behandelt werden vor allem Probleme der Gattungszuordnung und Gattungsentwicklung; stoff-, entstehungs- und sagengeschichtliche Grundlagen (vor dem Hintergrund der Dietrich-Testimonien); Aspekte der Überlieferungsgeschichte (auf der Basis der Bremer textgeschichtlichen Neuausgaben); Probleme der Poetik (insbesondere Erzählprinzipien und Strukturprobleme von Schemaliteratur und ‚seriellem‘ Schreiben wie repetitive Strukturen, Widersprüche und Brüche; Erzählerrolle und Intertextualität); Heldenkonzeptionen und Figurenkonstellationen; Fragen der Deutung (insbesondere ‚Historizität‘ und Aktualisierbarkeit des heldenepischen Stoffes, Diskussion von Heldentum und Gewalt); die literarhistorische Einordnung als „Dichtung über Heldendichtung“.
