Die Großbuchstaben hatten leider nicht dazu geführt, daß mir die Klienten die Tür einrannten. In der Linken hielt ich eine halbvolle Flasche Bourbon, die Rechte suchte in der Seitentasche des Jacketts nach dem Türschlüssel. Es war halb vier am Morgen, ich war hundemüde und der Bourbon trug sicherlich auch nicht zu einem klaren Kopf bei. Aber als ich die Kratzspuren am Türschloß sah, war mir klar, daß etwas nicht stimmte. Innerhalb einer Sekunde war ich hellwach und so nüchtern wie ein reformierter Prediger. Ich stellte die Bourbon-Flasche auf den Boden, nahm mit der Linken den Schlüssel und riß mit der Rechten die 45er Automatik aus dem Schulterholster, das mein Jackett ausbeulte. Kalte Wut stieg in mir auf. Ich zählte zwei und zwei zusammen. Jemand hatte mir einen unangemeldeten Besuch abstatten wollen, soviel stand fest.
