About this ebook

The problems with the Bible that New Testament scholar Bart Ehrman discussed in his bestseller Misquoting Jesus—and on The Daily Show with John Stewart, NPR, and Dateline NBC, among others—are expanded upon exponentially in his latest book: Jesus, Interrupted. This New York Times bestseller reveals how books in the Bible were actually forged by later authors, and that the New Testament itself is riddled with contradictory claims about Jesus—information that scholars know… but the general public does not. If you enjoy the work of Elaine Pagels, Marcus Borg, John Dominic Crossan, and John Shelby Spong, you’ll find much to ponder in Jesus, Interrupted.

Bart's childish conclusion that since Biblical texts aren't written as historical dissertations, they're full of "errors" and therefore unreliable is hilarious to me. He's clearly upset that the Bible isn't what he was taught as a child and has devoted decades of his life to the longest and most eloquent temper tantrum of all time. He writes and speaks as if his opinions and historical facts are one and the same. He presents paragraphs full of great questions and doesn't address a single one because his point is that having these questions at all means the Bible is unreliable. He'll tell you what "most scholars" believe as if he's polled them all. If you want the same information without the author conflating their conclusions with fact, posing questions they don't actually want you to think about, or using hyperbolic and unprovable broad brush statements to make a point, the works of N.T. Wright and Tim Mackie are much better and less self referential in their citing their sources.

I always appreciate Bart Ehrman's work, and "Jesus, Interrupted" is no exception. It offers a compelling exploration of early C.hristianity, tracing its influence through to modern times. What's particularly revelatory is Ehrman's examination of how the image and teachings of Jesus have been shaped and sometimes manipulated throughout history, offering a crucial understanding of how Christian doctrine has evolved.

In the book, "Finding the Real Jesus" by Lee Strobel, Ehrman's pseudo-scholarship is addressed. The vast majority of the "contradictions" found in the New Testament are merely variations such as synonyms and the like. Not a single Christian doctrine comes even remotely close to being contradicted. Anything but the whole truth is not truth-- it is false, a lie.
