A truly enjoyable read, due to its well-trodden story arc and exceptionally good pacing. Great character building also. The narration has issues with flow and with grammar, which really lets it down. The foreshadowing is plain and straightforward; a little obvious, but still quite satisfying. All in all, I'm looking forward to the next one.

This is one of the first fantasy novels I have read due to the cover attracting me & the subject of warrior like nuns sounded really cool. I wanted a Game Of Thrones type story & although it has its moments (the fight scenes brought this up a star due to being so graphic & spectacular in equal measure!!) it felt more like a Harry Potter type scenario. The story though very well detailed & written, tended to drag. I also found due to my inexperience of this genre, a little confusing, some parts of the story certainly went over my head a little. To be fair though I didn't help with my reading of the book stopping & starting. As I've mentioned the battle scenes were fantastic though & Nona Grey being such a good lead character, some of the supporting roles could be a little tedious & some what unlikeable I'm still willing to plow on through this trilogy, I recommend with caution.

About the author

Mark Lawrence was born in Champagne-Urbanan, Illinois, to British parents but moved to the UK at the age of one. He went back to the US after taking a PhD in mathematics at Imperial College to work on a variety of research projects including the ‘Star Wars’ missile defence programme. Returning to the UK, he has worked mainly on image processing and decision/reasoning theory. He says he never had any ambition to be a writer so was very surprised when a half-hearted attempt to find an agent turned into a global publishing deal overnight. His first trilogy, The Broken Empire, has been universally acclaimed as a ground-breaking work of fantasy, and both Emperor of Thorns and The Liar’s Key have won the Gemmell Legend award for best fantasy novel. Mark is married, with four children, and lives in Bristol.
