About the author
Louisa May Alcott wurde am 29. November 1832 in Germantown, Pennsylvania geboren. Gemeinsam mit ihren Geschwistern wuchs sie in ärmlichen Verhältnissen auf. Später verdiente sie sich u. a. als Lehrerin, Näherin und Haushälterin ihren Lebensunterhalt. Ihre Begeisterung für das Schreiben begann jedoch früh, teilweise veröffentlichte sie auch unter Pseudonym (A. M. Barnard). »Little Women«, das auf eigenen Kindheitserlebnissen beruht, zählt zu den erfolgreichsten Jugendbüchern aus dem englischsprachigen Raum. Es wurde in 27 Sprachen übersetzt und brachte ihr weltweite Berühmtheit. Am 6. März 1888 verstarb sie in Massachusetts.
