The 45.52-carat Hope Diamond is the largest deep-blue diamond in the world. In its body of less than one cubic inch, it holds a history dripping with mystery, conspiracy and celebrity. It is now housed behind three inches of bulletproof glass in the Smithsonian National Museum of Natural History, and looks out at a world fixated with its beauty and history. Originally 115 carats, the Hope Diamond was discovered in India by the French merchant-traveller Jean Tavernier, in the 1660s. Born in 1605, Tavernier was apprenticed to a jeweller at a young age. Later in life, between 1631 and 1638, he made six trips to India to obtain and trade diamonds.
