Im September 1522 erschien erstmals Luthers Bibelübersetzung bei Melchior Lotter d. J. in Wittenberg im Druck (»Septembertestament«). Ein umfassendes, zeitlich unbefristetes kurfürstliches Druck- und Vertriebsprivileg machte Wittenberg für fast ein Jahrhundert zum wichtigsten Druckort für deutschsprachige Bibeln im Reich. Der Tagungsband anlässlich des 500. Jubiläums der ersten Lutherbibel beleuchtet in zahlreichen teils reich bebilderten Beiträgen namhafter HistorikerInnen und BuchwissenschaftlerInnen wesentliche Aspekte des Drucks, der Illustrierung, der Beigabe von Begleittexten (»Paratexte«) und der fortlaufenden Revision der Lutherbibel. Einen weiteren Schwerpunkt des Bandes bildet die Rezeption der Wittenberger Bibelausgaben an den Höfen sowie deren Gebrauch und Lektüre durch Bürgertum und Niederadel. Mit Beiträgen von Ulrich Bubenheimer, Thomas Fuchs, Stephan Füssel, Mirko Gutjahr, Hans-Peter Hasse, Ricarda Höffler, Hartmut Kühne, Thomas Lang, Tim Lorentzen, Ulrike Ludwig, Matthias Meinhardt, Stefan Michel, Stefan Oehmig, Stefan Rhein, Ruth Slenczka, Heike Stöcklein, Susanne Wegmann, Nikolaus Weichselbaumer und Esther P. Wipfler. [Wittenberg Bible Printing of the Reformation Era] In September 1522, Luther's translation of the Bible was printed for the first time by Melchior Lotter the Younger in Wittenberg (»September Testament«). A comprehensive, unlimited printing and distribution privilege granted by the elector made Wittenberg the most important printing location for German-language Bibles in the empire for almost a century. The conference volume on the occasion of the 500th anniversary of the first Luther Bible highlights essential aspects of printing, illustration, the addition of accompanying texts (»paratexts«) and the ongoing revision of the Luther Bible in numerous, in part richly illustrated, contributions by renowned historians and book scholars. Another focus of the volume is the reception of the Wittenberg Bible editions at the courts as well as their use and reading by the bourgeoisie and the lower nobility.
