This book introduces an innovative, authentic curricular model to systematically coach or teach soccer to develop students’ and athletes’ game competence. This curricular model, called Situated Game Teaching through Set Plays (SGTSP), manifests the situational and relational aspects of soccer games, where changes in the relationships among players, tasks, and environmental constraints affect their game performance. This book provides detailed descriptions of the SGTSP model, its main features and pedagogical steps, how it differentiates from previous game-centered approaches, and research evidence to support its effectiveness. It also provides practical examples on applying the SGTSP curriculum model to coach or teach soccer. This book is evidence-based, comprehensive, and systematic, and provides useful resources for university instructors, physical education teachers, and coaches at varied levels to successfully coach or teach soccer, thus improving students and players’ technical ability, tactical knowledge, and game performance.

About the author

Obidiah Atkinson is a doctoral candidate in the Department of Human Sciences at the Ohio State University, having received his MS in Sports Coaching from the same institution in 2019. He has published nine articles in peer-reviewed journals and co-authored two book chapters. He is a former collegiate soccer player and has coached soccer across a variety of contexts from youth developmental to college settings. He also has United States Soccer Federation C and Canada Soccer B coaching licenses, and is currently manager for the men’s soccer program at the Ohio State University.

Dr Weidong Li is a tenured Professor in the Department of Human Sciences at the Ohio State University. He received his PhD in Sports Pedagogy and MS in Experimental Statistics from Louisiana State University. Dr Li has published 78 peer-reviewed journal articles, five books, and seven book chapters, and is a Research Fellow of the Society of Health and Physical Educator (SHAPE). He served as the editor of Journal of Teaching in Physical Education from 2014 to 2018, and has received various major national awards.
