....In a small village in Bihar, a wedding procession moves along the road. Amidst the revelry, three young girls dance to lewd Bhojpuri songs blaring from the DJ speakers. Their movements are vulgar, provocative, and designed to entertain the intoxicated crowd of wedding guests and hosts alike. Alcohol flows freely, while marijuana and hashish smoke fill the air. Yet, no one can touch these girls—they are caged. A mobile enclosure mounted on four wheels, carrying them through the village, making its rounds with the wedding procession.
In Bihar and Uttar Pradesh, hiring an orchestra group with female dancers has become a ritual at every celebration—be it a wedding, a religious festival, or even a funeral. The spectacle of caged dancers, known as Pinjra Naach (cage dance), has become commonplace, even at death feasts and last rites.
The rise of these orchestras has fueled crime in the region. On one hand, girls are kidnapped and trafficked, forced into dancing and singing, and ultimately pushed into prostitution. On the other, audiences intoxicated by alcohol and desire refuse to take no for an answer. If a man fails to dance with a performer, he might just pull the trigger on her.
This is the grim reality of the orchestra business in Bihar and Uttar Pradesh—a truth no one can ignore. These dance orchestras are hotbeds of crime, harboring everything from sex trafficking to illicit liquor trade. The Anti-Liquor Task Force of Bihar has confiscated large consignments of smuggled Nepali and foreign liquor from orchestra operators. Meanwhile, fights over song requests at weddings frequently escalate into brawls, riots, and murders. Complaints flood police stations, but action remains elusive. Even disputes between orchestra organizers and dancers over payment often turn violent, with beatings and gunfire becoming routine.
And when dancers muster the courage to file rape cases against their employers, they are threatened with death unless they withdraw their complaints.
The question then arises—if Mumbai’s dance bars could be banned, why are these orchestras still allowed to thrive? Why does the law turn a blind eye? There are countless questions that stir the conscience, and this book holds the answers to them all.
