Born in Brussels in 1984, Mathieu Burniat was drawn to art and illustration from a young age. As a teenager, he took part in an animated film workshop called Zorobabel, and in 2007, he earned a degree in industrial design at the renowned visual arts school La Cambre. Burniat worked for two years as an industrial designer, which led him to travel to China to meet with local industrial companies. During these trips, he compiled countless images and souvenirs that would help him to create โShrimp' (Dargaud 2012), his first comic book. Since then, Burniat has become a rising star in the field, completing โLa Passion de Dodin-Bouffant' in 2014 (Dargaud; Europe Comics in English, โDodin-Bouffant: Gourmet Extraordinaire'), followed by the celebrated โLe Mystรจre du monde quantique' in 2016 (Dargaud; Penguin in English, โMysteries of the Quantum Universe').
