India, with its vast rural landscape, has long emphasized rural development as a crucial pillar of its socio-economic progress. This book provides a comprehensive understanding of rural development, going beyond agriculture to explore the broader aspects of improving living conditions, opportunities and empowerment in rural areas.

It delves into the definitions of 'rural' and 'development' from both national and global perspectives, examining key theories, indicators, and objectives. The book traces the evolution of rural development in India, from pre-independence to the present, analyzing major policy shifts, their impact, and the effectiveness of various initiatives.

A special focus is given to the role of international organizations in shaping global rural development trends. Additionally, it evaluates different approaches, government programmes, and the importance of community participation in fostering sustainable rural growth. This book is an essential read for policymakers, researchers, and anyone interested in understanding India's rural transformation.
