Об электронной книге

The application of transition metals over the past century has altered how chemists practice organic synthesis. Organometallic chemistry can improve the efficiency with which molecules are made. While undergraduate organic chemistry courses introduce the basics of organometallic chemistry, early engagement in the literature is often still daunting to junior practitioners of organic synthesis due to differences between arrow-pushing convention and the many different themes that make up modern transition metal catalysis. When first reading the broad organometallic literature, new metals, complex ligands, and unique organometallic mechanisms can often be overwhelming.

This primer is designed to introduce junior practitioners to the fundamentals of transition metal catalysis and the new exciting areas of research that have emerged over the past few decades. Chapter 1 focuses on the impact that transition metal catalysis has had on organic chemistry and society. Chapter 2 surveys the general properties of transition metals, including the elementary steps that enable catalysis. This complements the typical undergraduate organic chemistry curriculum on transition metals, which is generally confined to organolithium, organomagnesium (i.e., the Grignard reaction), and organocuprate (i.e., the Gilman reaction) reagents that are not catalysts. Chapter 3 covers classic transition metal catalysis, and Chapter 4 delves into modern developments, including C−H functionalization, metal carbene chemistry, and photochemistry.

Throughout the primer are useful pedagogical features to enhance the reading experience: a pop-up glossary provides seamless learning, Insider Q&A videos offer expert explanations and opinions, That’s a Wrap bulleted summaries appear at the end of each chapter as does the section Read These Next, a brief list of suggested references to aid readers’ transition into the literature.

Об авторе

Justin D. DeBow is a Ph.D. candidate at the University of California, Riverside (UCR), working in Kevin Kou’s organic synthesis lab. He received a Bachelor of Science in Chemistry from the University of California, Merced, training under Dr. Ryan Baxter. His research focuses on the total synthesis of natural products and the development of synthetic methodologies pertaining to highly reactive hypovalent oxygen species and transition metal catalyzed C−H functionalization.

Kevin G. M. Kou is an Assistant Professor of Chemistry at the University of California, Riverside. He obtained his Ph.D. from the University of Toronto with Vy Dong and conducted postdoctoral research at UC Berkeley with Richmond Sarpong. His research program spans transition metal catalysis and natural product synthesis, with applications in human health and agrochemicals.
