Nato in Scozia da una famiglia di gentlemen, cresciuto e poi diseredato da un nonno crudele, il giovane Roderick Random è costretto a vagare per il mondo in cerca di un difficile riscatto. Eroe umanissimo, schietto e generoso, Roderick si dimostra impulsivo e facile al rancore quando si sente offeso, anche solo nella vanità. Attraversa così l’Europa, frequenta i ritrovi del popolo, s’imbatte in biscazzieri, prostitute, damerini, banditi e truffatori d’ogni specie, solca gli oceani a bordo di navi capitanate da comandanti spietati e insegue fino alla fine la giovane, bellissima Narcissa. Pubblicato nel 1748, Le avventure di Roderick Random rappresentano il vertice dell’opera di Smollett, che dichiarò di «non aver deviato dalla natura dei fatti, i quali sono sostanzialmente tutti veri». Nacque così questo esempio di «realismo picaresco» – com’è stato spesso definito – che influenzerà profondamente l’intera narrativa anglosassone, e che sarà un riferimento costante per autori come Walter Scott e Charles Dickens.
