Про цю електронну книгу

One of Russia's greatest writers, Chekhov began his career writing jokes and anecdotes for popular magazines to support himself while he studied to become a doctor. Between 1888 and his death he single-handedly revolutionised both the drama and the short story. Near the end of his life he married an actress, Olga Knipper. He died from tuberculosis in 1904, age 44. "The Wife" is one of his classic short stories, not to be missed!

Про автора

Anton Chekhov (1860-1904) remains a towering figure in world literature, renowned for his profound short stories and plays that delve into the human condition with unparalleled subtlety and depth. Born in Taganrog, Russia, Chekhov initially pursued a career in medicine, famously stating, "Medicine is my lawful wife, and literature is my mistress." His dual professions deeply influenced his writing, infusing it with a keen observational eye and a compassionate understanding of human frailty.Chekhov's literary contributions are revolutionary in their departure from melodramatic conventions, instead embracing a more nuanced, realist approach. His works often explore themes of existential ennui, the passage of time, and the complexities of human relationships. Plays like "The Seagull," "Uncle Vanya," and "The Cherry Orchard" broke new ground with their focus on character development and subtext, laying the foundation for modernist drama.Controversially, Chekhov's works were initially met with mixed reactions; his subtlety and ambiguity puzzled audiences accustomed to more straightforward narratives. However, his influence on contemporary writers is undeniable. Figures such as James Joyce, Virginia Woolf, and Raymond Carver have cited Chekhov as a pivotal inspiration, particularly in their use of stream-of-consciousness and minimalist prose.Chekhov was also a progressive thinker, advocating for social reform and criticizing the injustices of his time. His compassionate portrayal of marginalized characters and his critique of the Russian aristocracy resonated with readers and thinkers pushing for change. In essence, Anton Chekhov's legacy endures not only through his literary masterpieces but also through his profound impact on the evolution of modern storytelling and his unwavering commitment to exploring the depths of the human soul.
