Nathaniel Hawthorne (1804–1864) was an American writer known for exploring themes of guilt, sin, and morality. Born in Salem, Massachusetts, his most famous work, The Scarlet Letter (1850), examines the social and personal tensions in a Puritan community. His dark, symbolic style made him a key figure in 19th-century American literature.
