In The Red Badge of Courage by Stephen Crane, a young private in the Union Army during the American Civil War flees from the field of battle after longing for "a red badge of courage" (a battle wound) to prove his courage. Although Stephen Crane did not participate in any Civil War battles, the novel is known for it's realistic portrayal of the battlefield.
