The Duchess of a certain medieval kingdom was having difficulty finding an additional servant. The women of the kingdom were either too old or they were burdened with their own household duties while the men were out fighting in feudal skirmishes.
One day as she stood at her window examining the passerbys on the street below, a young man wandered by who drew her attention. He was scrubby and he was a serf, so certainly he would enjoy a dry bed and warm meals in return for serving the duchess. What could go wrong?
