At the root of our understanding of territory is the concept of terra—land—a surface of fixed points with stable features that can be calculated, categorised, and controlled. But what of the many spaces on Earth that defy this simplistic characterisation: Oceans in which ‘places’ are continuously re-formed? Air that can never be fully contained? Kimberley Peters is a Senior Lecturer in Human Geography in the Department of Geography and Planning, University of Liverpool, UK.

Philip Steinberg is a Professor of Political Geography at Durham University, UK, where he directs IBRU: the Centre for Borders Research.

Elaine Stratford is a Professor in the Institute for the Study of Social Change at the University of Tasmania. She is also the lead editor of Rowman & Littlefield International’s series Rethinking the Island.
