Due to their specialized training, engineers play a crucial role in the design and development of new products and infrastructure, as well as in the creation of wealth. Consequently, engineers recognize that they have a specific responsibility in the performance of these functions to take such measures as are appropriate to safeguard the environment, health, safety and well-being of the public. This book proposes a series of sixteen practical cases, integrating knowledge from different fields of the mechanical engineering discipline, along with basic knowledge in environmental, occupational health and safety risk management.

The case studies provided are descriptions of a real system, its functioning and its instructions for use. The systems selected represent a broad spectrum of mechanical engineering issues and problems, such as fluid mechanics; thermodynamics; heat transfer; heating, ventilation and cooling; vibrations; dynamics; statics; failure of materials; automatics and mechatronics; hydraulics; product design; human factors; maintenance; and rapid prototyping, to name a few. The professional objective of the examples provided is to design or improve the design of the described system. This book is essential in transferring knowledge to future engineers with respect to the hazards resulting from their work.

लेखकाविषयी

Sylvie Nadeau is Director of Équipe de recherche en sécurité du travail (ÉREST), a post she has held since 2005. Professor Nadeau’s research and development efforts focus primarily on the management of health and safety risks, integrated risk management, and the prevention of musculoskeletal disorders.

An expert in the biomechanics of the musculoskeletal system and an Associate Member of ÉREST, Yvan Petit is in charge of the imaging and orthopedics laboratory at Sacré-Cœur Hospital in Montreal. He has notably contributed to the development of surgical tools and implants, and is actively involved in bone quality assessment, a field that attempts to prevent and repair fractures.

Stéphane Hallé is an expert in energy exchange analysis and air flow in buildings, and Deputy Director of ÉREST. His research focuses on ventilation strategies, indoor air quality, and tools to model the transportation, dispersion and agglomeration of nanoparticles.

François Morency is an expert in the modeling and simulation of industrial problems associated with the transportation of particles and ice formation, and Deputy Director of ÉREST. His research focuses on modeling tools that enable the prediction of ice accumulation on complex geometries in the field of aeronautics and on preventing the harmful effects caused by the dispersion of nanoparticles.

Louis Dufresne’s field of expertise is related to fluid dynamics and in particular to the application of CFD to the study of vortical and turbulent flows. His present research activities involve the numerical simulation of the atmospheric boundary layer, wake vortex dynamics, and mixing dynamics. Professor Dufresne also teaches courses in fluid dynamics and aerodynamics.
