Sogar manches Schulbuch präsentiert leibeigene Bauern als Basis einer «mittelalterlichen Lehnspyramide». All das ist Unfug. Steffen Patzold erläutert in dem vorliegenden Band, was wir über das Verhältnis von Herren und Vasallen im Mittelalter wissen und was es mit Wörtern wie Treue, Schutz und Schirm, Lehen, feudum und beneficium auf sich hat. Dabei macht er auch deutlich, warum unser lange Zeit sicher geglaubtes Wissen über das Lehnswesen mittlerweile wieder in Frage steht.
