Quando Mary Lou viene a sapere che come compito delle vacanze le toccherà scrivere un diario, la cosa non le piace affatto. Ma poi, a poco a poco, ci prende talmente gusto da riempire ben sei quaderni! Il che in fondo non è difficile, con la famiglia che si ritrova: un padre e una madre tremendamente pasticcioni e quattro fratelli scatenati.
Se a tutto questo si aggiungono le prime pene d'amore, i bisticci con un'inaffidabile "migliore amica" e gli esilaranti commenti all'Odissea, lettura estiva consigliata dalla scuola, bisogna dire che il materiale non manca . Ma il pezzo forte del diario (e dell'estate) è il mistero che circonda il cugino Carl Ray, ospite inatteso che finirà per sorprendere tutti
