 Drought is a natural hazard characterized by lower than expected or lower than normal rainfall having slow but widespread impact. This book focus on drought management and mitigation in agriculture and allied sectors. The chapters cover Basic concepts, assessment, monitoring, forecasting, early warning, vulnerability and adaptation to drought and mitigation and management strategies. Management of different land use systems under drought and finally socio economic impact and livelihood issues of drought are also focussed. It would be useful to a wide range of stakeholders, i.e. planners, researchers, students and interested public. This will also serve as text book as well as supplementary reading for courses in agronomy, ecology, geography and agro meteorology besides administration and disaster management units.

About the author

 Kumar, Suresh 

Dr. Suresh Kumar, an M.Sc. in Botany in 1977 from Univer sity of Delhi, Delhi was honoured with professor P. Maheshwari Memorial Award for achieving first position. He earned his PhD on vegetation ecology of Jaisalmer district in 1988 from Jai Narain Vyas University, Jodhpur. Since 1978 he has served at CAZRI Jodhpur. He has been Sr. Scientist (1986-1998) and Principal Scientist (1998-2009) and is currently Head, Division of Integrated Land Use Management and Farming System, CAZRI, Jodhpur. He has headed research programmes funded by ACIAR, JICA, MoEF, DST, DBT, NMPB, RSMML, BLMCL, NRSA, SAC. He has surveyed, documented and mapped vegetation of almost all districts of western Rajasthan using satellite data and ground truthing. This extensive knowledge about vegetation and its management became evident in successful completion of rehabilitation of sand dunes (through aerial seeding), rocky habitats, limestone, gypsum and lignite mine spoils. Conservation of threatened species in all these rehabilitations was successfully demonstrated. He has 246 publications, of which 64 are in peer reviewed journals and 9 research monographs/books. He has been invited to deliver lectures in many national institutions/universities and international institutions in Japan, Australia, Sharjah and USA. He has also visited Cambridge, UK. He has been honoured with ICAR coveted Team Research Award in 1984 and Dr. K. A. Shankarnarayan Award in 1992. He has been member of important national committees of MoEF, New Delhi, such as Expert Group on Botanical Gardens, Expert group on Desert Biosphere Reserve and National Biodiversity Strategy and Action Plan. He has recently been nominated to International Cactus Committee to represent South Asia. The Desert Botanical Garden under his supervision since 1996 has been conferred the status of a “Lead Garden” by MoEF, New Delhi for excellent conservation efforts. He is currently handling a DBT programme on All India Network Project on “Preventing extinction and improving conservation status of threatened plants through application of biotechnological tools”.

Tanwar, S.P.S.
Dr. S.P.S. Tanwar, an Agronomist for 15 years has immensely contributed in research, teaching and policy planning. After his Ph.D. from Maharana Pratap University of Agriculture & Technology as a merit scholar, he worked At NBPGR, The Fertilizer Association of India, New Delhi and Assistant Professor in MPUAT. He Joined ICAR-CAZRI in 2008 and rose to Principal Scientist in 2014. His research mainly focus on resource conservation technologies, Integrated farming system, drought management and climate change. He has more than 80 publications of which many are awarded best paper . He has also represented India in NPC- APO workshop on Integrated Farming System in Colombo, Sri Lanka

Singh, Akath
Dr. Akath Singh, Senior Scientist (Horticulture) at ICARCentral Arid Zone Research Institute with more than 15 years of experience in production and improvement of various fruit crops. He had his post graduation from Dr. Y.S. Parmar UHF, Solan (H.P) and Ph.D. from BHU Varanasi U.P. During his early career as Scientist at ICAR Research Complex for NEH Region Meghalaya he immensely contributed in hill horticulture. Presently he has been engaged in various aspects of resource management in arid fruit crops worth mentioning are pomegranate, ber and lasora. He was a delegate Indian scientist to China. He has been honoured with BIOVED Young Scientist Associate Award 2014. He has more than 80 publications to his credit.
