Jahrhunderts bezeichnet: die Lieder-Edda, eine Sammlung von Götter- und Heldenliedern, deren Stoffe (wie der vom Nibelungenuntergang) bis in die Völkerwanderungszeit zurückreichen können, sowie die sogenannte Prosa-Edda des isländischen Gelehrten, Dichters und Politikers Snorri Sturluson (1178/9–1241). Ein Handbuch für Dichter, das ganz nebenbei zahlreiche der bekannten Göttergeschichten der nordischen Mythologie überliefert. Rudolf Simek stellt beide Edden und deren Götter- und Heldensagen vor.
