In 1812, In timpul retragerii Armatei Imperiale Franceze din Rusia, colonelul Armand Kergaz este ucis de catre subordonatul sau, capitanul Felipone. Patru ani mai tarziu, vaduva lui Kergaz – care avea un fiu, numit ca si tatal sau, Armand – se casatori cu Felipone (nestiind ca acesta era ucigașul soțului ei), cu care avu un alt fiu, Andrea.
Actiunea romanului continua, In 1840, cu lupta dintre cei doi frati dupa mama – contele Armand de Kergaz si vicontele Andrea Felipone – deveniti inamici. Andrea jurase sa-și Insușeasca moștenirea baronului Kermor Kermarouet, al carei executor testamentar era Armand. Pentru a-si atinge scopul, vicontele nu se va da In laturi de la nici o faradelege.
