चैतन्य महाप्रभु का बचपन का नाम विश्वंभर था। उनका जन्म चंद्रग्रहण के दिन हुआ था। लोग चंद्रग्रहण के शाप के निवारणार्थ धर्म-कर्म; मंत्र आह्वान; ओ३म् आदि जप-तप में जुटे हुए थे। शायद इस धार्मिक प्रभाव के कारण ही चैतन्य बचपन से ही कृष्ण-प्रेम और जप-तप में जुट गए। ज्योतिषियों ने भविष्यवाणी कर दी थी कि यह बालक उच्च कोटि का संत बनेगा और अपने भक्तों को संसार-सागर से तार देगा। बचपन से ही चैतन्य कुशाग्र बुद्धि के थे। उन्होंने अपने अकाट्य तर्कों से स्थानीय पंडितों को दर्शन और अध्यात्म चर्चा में धराशायी कर दिया था। बाद में वैष्णव दीक्षा लेने के पश्चात् चैतन्य दार्शनिक चर्चा के प्रति उदासीन हो गए। उन्होंने कृष्ण नाम-कीर्तन आरंभ कर दिया। चैतन्य ने कलियुग में भक्तियोग को मुक्ति का श्रेष्ठ मार्ग बताया है। उनकी लोकप्रियता से खिन्न होकर एक बार एक पंडित ने उन्हें शाप देते हुए कहा; ‘तुम सारी भौतिक सुविधाओं से वंचित हो जाओ।’ यह सुनकर चैतन्य खुशी से नाचने लगे। माता-पिता ने उन्हें घर-गृहस्थी की ओर मोड़ने के लिए उनका विवाह भी कर दिया; लेकिन उन्होंने गृह त्याग दिया; अब सारी दुनिया ही उनका घर थी। भगवान् कृष्ण के अनन्य उपासक; आध्यात्मिक ज्ञान की चरम स्थिति को प्राप्त हुए चैतन्य प्रभु की ईश्वर-भक्ति की सरस जीवन-गाथा जो पाठक को भक्ति की पुण्यसलिला में सराबोर कर देगी।
