Rabiatul Adawiyah anak bongsu daripada empat orang adik-beradik.
Beliau dinamakan Rabiah yang bermaksud nombor empat. Walaupun mendapat pelbagai reaksi daripada pelbagai pihak, ayahnya tetap dengan keputusannya.
Kisahnya bermula sebelum kelahirannya lagi. Ayahnya Rabiatul adalah seorang yang baik akhlak dan elok ilmu agamanya.
Semasa dia masih kecil kedua-dua ibu bapanya meninggal dan tinggallah dia dengan kakak-kakaknya. Kemudiannya ujian Tuhan datang lagi, dia diculik dan menjadi hamba pada satu keluarga kaya. Daripada situlah perjalanan spiritual Rabiatul berkembang sehinggalah beliau diiktiraf sebagai wali.
