தமிழ் கூறும் நல்லுலகில் அமரர் கல்கியின் பொன்னியின் செல்வனைப் பற்றித் தெரியாதவர்கள் மிகச் சிலரே. “ஆதி அந்தமில்லாத கால வெள்ளத்தில்” என்று தொடங்கும் அந்தப் புதினத்தின் முதல் அத்தியாயத்தைப் படிக்க ஆரம்பித்து விட்டால், பிறகு அதன் ஐந்து பாகங்களையும் படித்து முடிக்கும் வரை எவருக்கும் ஊண், உறக்கம் பிடிக்காது. மீண்டும் மீண்டும் எத்தனை முறை படித்தாலும் எவருக்கும் திகட்டுவதுமில்லை. பல்லாயிரம் வாசகர்கள் படித்து மகிழ்ந்த, அந்தப் புதினத்தை, திரை வடிவில் கொண்டு வர பல வருட காலமாகவே முயற்சிகள் நடந்தன. தற்பொழுதும் அந்த முயற்சி தொடர்கிறது என்று அறிகிறோம். மேடை நாடக வடிவிலும் சிலர் அரங்கேற்றி இருக்கிறார்கள். அந்த நிலையில், “பொன்னியின் செல்வன்” புதினத்தை தொலைக் காட்சித் தொடராகவோ அல்லது, வலைத் தொடராகவோ கொண்டு வரவும் ஆர்வத்துடன் முயற்சிகள் நடைபெற்றுக் கொண்டிருக்கின்றன. அந்த நோக்கத்தில் வரையப்பட்டதே இந்தத் திரை வடிவமும் உரையாடல்களும்.

இந்தத் தொடர், ஒரு கதை போல அல்லாது ஒரு திரைப்பட வடிவத்திலே காட்சிகளாகப் புனையப்பட்டிருக்கிறது. புதினத்தில் காணப்படும் நிகழ்ச்சித் தொடர்கள் பெரும்பாலும் மாற்றம் இன்றி இந்தக் காட்சித் தொடரிலும் கொண்டு வரப்பட்டிருக்கின்றன. பேராசிரியர் கல்கியின் உரையாடல்களும் பெரும்பாலும் மாற்றம் இன்றி பயன்படுத்தப் பட்டிருக்கின்றன. சில இடங்களில் காட்சிகளும் உரையாடல்களும் குறைத்தும் மாற்றியும். அமைக்கப்பட்டுள்ளன. இது காட்சிகளின் விறுவிறுப்பு கருதி மட்டுமே அன்றி வேறு காரணமில்லை.

பொன்னியின் செல்வன் புதினத்தை ஒரு புதிய வடிவில் கொண்டு வரும் இந்த முயற்சிக்கு வாசகர்கள் தங்கள் பேராதரவை அளிப்பீர்கள் என்பதில் ஐயமில்லை. தமிழ் இலக்கிய உலகில் “வரலாற்றுப் புதினங்களின் பிதாமகன்” என்று போற்றப்படும் அமரர் கல்கி அவர்களின் நினைவுக்கு இந்தத் தொடரை சமர்ப்பிக்கிறோம்.
