It's took about 1/4 of this book for me to get into it, but once I did, I was hooked. This book is a retelling of The Adventures of Huckelberry Finn from the viewpoint of Jim. It was such an amazing idea, I don't want to say more to give any spoilers. This book was interesting in that it really made me think a lot about interpersonal communication and how we all alter ourselves (to some extent) to meet the needs and expectations of other people.

It is a great story with well developed characters that you can identify with. James in particular is a complex character. I like the relationship with The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn. I will be going back and rereading that work.

this book is everything. fun, ferocious. filthy, and fearless. it attacks racism, self-hate in a way that is seldom. James, dives into the psyche of America and the innocence of youth. if you want to smile, smirk, cry, and sigh read it. I loved this read.
About the author
PERCIVAL EVERETT is a Distinguished Professor of English at USC. His most recent books include Dr. No (finalist for the NBCC Award for Fiction and winner of the PEN/ Jean Stein Book Award), The Trees (finalist for the Booker Prize and the PEN/Faulkner Award for Fiction), Telephone (finalist for the Pulitzer Prize), So Much Blue, Erasure, and I Am Not Sidney Poitier. He has received the NBCC Ivan Sandrof Life Achievement Award and The Windham Campbell Prize from Yale University. American Fiction, the feature film based on his novel Erasure, was released in 2023 and was awarded the Academy Award for Best Adapted Screenplay. He lives in Los Angeles with his wife, the writer Danzy Senna, and their children
