Kalingajja , a pure common man, use to workship his cow wholeheartedly. On the other hand, America returned Natu use to think of his cow, as only milk and meat giving domestic animal. This novel narrates the conflicts between the values, emotions and ethics of these contrast people. The novel starts with a song on cow, translated in almost every known language, and seeks through finding the importance of values rooted deeply in Indian culture. Artworks based on this novel in Kannad and “Godhuli” in Hindi movies have received acknowledgements at National and International levels. Even today, this novel published in 1968, is counted as one of the epic and incredibly narrated novel. This powerful and convincing novel, vigilant the two contradictions, love and anger, predominantly, for sure!!
गाईला सर्व देवतांचं स्वरूप मानून तिची पूजा करणारा काळिंगज्जा आणि तिला केवळ दूध आणि मांस देणारा प्राणी मानणारा त्याचा अमेरिकेतून परतलेला नातू या दोघांच्या मूल्यसंवेदनांवरील संघर्ष हा या कादंबरीचा विषय. भारतातल्या बहुतेक सगळ्या भाषांमध्ये प्रचलित असलेल्या गाईच्या गाण्यानं सुरू होत असलेली ही कादंबरी भारतीय संस्कृतीच्या मुळाशी जाऊन काही मूल्यांचा शोध घेताना दिसते. या कलाकृतीवर आधारलेल्या कन्नड आणि `गोधुली' या हिंदी चित्रपटांनी राष्ट्रीय आणि आंतरराष्ट्रीय पातळीवर सन्मान मिळवले आहेत. १९६८ मध्ये प्रसिद्ध झालेल्या या कादंबरीला आजही काही जण `उत्कृष्ट साहित्यकृती' मानतात. प्रेम आणि राग या दोन्ही प्रवृत्ती जागृत करणारी ही एक सशक्त कलाकृती आहे, हे निश्चित!
