About this ebook

"Matthews weaves suspense and mystery within an absorbing love story. Readers will be hard put to set this one down before the end." -Library Journal, STARRED review

Winner of the 2020 HOLT Medallion

An Uncommon Beauty...

Hidden away in rural Devonshire, Phyllida Satterthwaite has always been considered more odd than beautiful. But in London, her oddity has made her a sensation. Far worse, it's caught the eye of the sinister Duke of Moreland--a notorious art collector obsessed with acquiring one-of-a-kind treasures. To escape the duke's clutches, she's going to need a little help.

An Unlikely Hero...

Captain Arthur Heywood's days of heroism are long past. Grievously injured in the Peninsular War, he can no longer walk unaided, let alone shoot a pistol. What use can he possibly be to a damsel in distress? He has nothing left to offer except his good name.

Can a marriage of convenience save Philly from the vengeful duke? Or will life with Arthur put her--and her heart--in more danger than ever?

I read The Work of Art because it was free and I wanted to escape the mindless scrolling on social media. This book absolutely saved me! I couldn't wait for more and couldn't put it down easily. I bought Gentleman Jim and starting it tonight. Absolutely adore Mimi's writing, I could really picture everything and loved the characters. What an unexpected ending, genius! I never pictured myself reading these kind of categories, but definitely no turning back. I'll finish this series then moving to her novels. Thank you Mimi!

Such a beautiful story! The Regency-era London/countryside setting was enjoyable to read about. The author has done wonderful work creating such three-dimensional characters! When reading about Philly and Arthur— they feel so real, admirable, & likeable that you instantly want to welcome them & their story into your heart. This is a historical romance story that feels fresh & new and would appeal to many readers. Even those who may not often read Historical Romance. I highly recommend

Charming, delightful story Philly is my kinda girl - her love for her dogs is unparalleled, and I loved her all the more for it. Her romance with the quiet, solid Arthur was wonderfully complicated by not only her dogs, but her unabashed zest for life. Of course with a woman like Philly, there's competition for her hand. This brought out the best in Arthur, as he is compelled to rescue her from a horrible marriage by offering for her himself. Thus their "marriage of convenience" provides all the space they need to fall hopelessly, deeply in love. I love this author's writing style, and I was swept along with this story right from the start all the way to the daring and surprising finale. It's a terrific story, one that I highly recommend.
