This book, the first of its kind by Indian authors, tries to develop a comprehensive understanding of microbial metabolism. It deals with all basic and unique physiological aspects of microorganisms in an ordered sequence with profuse illustrations. Discussion of all chapters is based on the concepts of bioenergetics which form the life-line of metabolic functions. It provides the foundation and general frame work for further understanding of the subject. This book not only serves as a text for undergraduate, post-graduate students, but also as a reference book to teachers, researchers and all others interested in the metabolism of the microorganisms in particular and living organisms in general.

S. Ram Reddy

Dr. S. Ram Reddy, Professor of Microbiology, has a teaching experience for nearly three decades both at UG and PG levels. He edited and authored more than a dozen books. His areas of research include microbial physiology, bioinoculants and biodiversity of microorganisms. He handled a number of research projects funded by UGC, DBT, CSIR, DST etc. He published more than seventy research papers and guided about a dozen students for their Ph.D. and M.Phil. degrees. He is a fellow of Indian Phytopathological Society and an active member of many academic bodies.

S.M. Reddy

Dr. S.M. Reddy, Professor Emeritus (UGC), Department of Botany, Kakatiya University, is a recipient of Best Teacher Award by the Govt. of A.P. He authored/edited about 15 books of university education. His research work spans over wide areas of microbiology right from microbial diversity to microbial biotechnology. He guided 40 students for the Ph.D. degrees and published more than 400 original research papers in national and international journals. Successfully completed nearly 20 research projects sponsored by different funding agencies. He is a fellow of many academic societies and an active member of several academic bodies.
