Wow, what an incredible personal account. This is what leadership looks like. this memoir is a poignant example of the actions and character of true leader - something that, unfortunately, America is sorely lacking. Col. Tallmadge's honesty, humility, gratitude and sense of responsibility are intrenched in his writing and are such a joy to read. He speaks with so much respect and admiration of his comrades and more importantly, his subordinates. His accounts of General Washington's interactions with the soldiers are also filled with such sincere respect, affection and appreciation. Tallmadge's and Washington's relationships with the people they led and served is something all leaders should strive for.

I watched the series "Turn" which includes Benjamin Tallmadge, and wanting to know more about the man, came across the autobiography. Although brief and lacking in detail, a wonderful exploration of a modest man through whom much benefit to the United States of America derived. Well worth the time to read and re-read.
