The incidence of measles, mumps and rubella has greatly reduced in many Western countries after the introduction of the MMR vaccine . Measles still occurs widely in Europe: more than 30 000 cases in 2011. If one of these illnesses is suspected, a specialist in infectious diseases should be consulted. The diagnosis must always be confirmed with antibody and PCR assays. Further, if a child aged 6–11 months travels abroad he/she should get the first MMR vaccination before the travel.
