The Weird and the Eerie è l'ultimo libro pubblicato in vita da Mark Fisher, lo scrittore e critico culturale inglese che anche nel nostro paese sta ora raccogliendo grande interesse. Il suo Realismo capitalista ha generato un vivace dibattito e ha mostrato come Fisher sia una figura fondamentale per comprendere il presente. Ricordando l'amico, Simon Reynolds ha scritto: «Costruendo, con incomparabile rigore ed eloquenza, un ponte che collega estetica e politica, critica e attivismo, Fisher era davvero un intellettuale impegnato, potremmo dire persino: un John Berger post rave». Quest'ultima definizione è perfetta anche per inquadrare The Weird and the Eerie, dove s'indagano – tra letteratura, musica e cinema – due forme/sentimenti che non hanno una perfetta corrispondenza nella nostra lingua. Solo approssimativamente, infatti, il weird può essere reso con «strano» e l'eerie con «inquietante». Fisher segue e spiega queste categorie attraverso le arti e le epoche: il weird si rivela così nei racconti di H.P. Lovecraft, nelle canzoni dei Fall, nei romanzi di Philip Dick e nei film di David Lynch, mentre l'eerie si manifesta nell'opera di scrittori, musicisti e registi come Margaret Atwood, Brian Eno, Stanley Kubrick e Christopher Nolan. «Il fascino di weird ed eerie non è sintetizzabile nell'idea che "ricaviamo piacere da ciò che ci spaventa". Ha piuttosto a che vedere con l'attrazione per l'esterno, per ciò che sta al di là della percezione, della conoscenza e dell'esperienza comune», scrive Fisher. In questo libro, il reale si apre dunque all'ignoto, all'incubo e all'incanto.
