Margaret Watkins
For the Children is a well-written suspenseful drama that keeps the reader's attention from first to last. Ms Watson very cleverly kept up the level of suspense throughout the book, never once allowing it to relax until the very end, which was surprising given the lack of violence in the book. FBI agent Damien Kane has been assigned to the case where twin girls are witnesses to a murder. Apart from the stress caused by keeping the girls and their aunt safe, Damien is also haunted by similarities to his past and the loss he has experienced. Abby is an overly protective aunt and while one might question her over zealousness, when the truth of why she has been left to care for her nieces comes out, she more than earns the right to take every precaution possible. Damien and Abby are thrown together in a bid to keep the twins safe and there follows the push and pull of a mutual attraction they are both experiencing, but don't want to acknowledge. Evading would be killers, the small group find themselves hiding out in Cameron, Utah, where in a momentary lapse in vigilance Damien and Abby succumb to their feelings for one another. However, at the end of the day when the twins are once more safe, Damien rides off into the sunset to apprehend his suspect and Abby is left with the knowledge that he is married to his job and any hopes she might have had for a future together are destroyed when duty calls. The book fortunately does come to a happy conclusion, leaving the reader with a sense of satisfaction. I received this book for free from eBook Discovery. I voluntarily post this review.
